Pinus balfouriana - Tree with a tall trunk

Balfouriana is a tree with a tall trunk, occurs in the subalpine forest at an elevation. The populations are found in the southern Klamath Mountains. The subspecies have a disjunct distribution with the closest two populations, are of uncommon conservation concern. Subspecies austrina occurs in pure stands in the southern Sierra Nevada. The tree shows scarring, due woodpecker activity, grows on steep slopes beneath mountain precipices.
