Sir George Houstoun Reid was an Australian politician. Reid was something of a public intellectual, was elected Leader of the Opposition, had great trouble and was to secure able, greater concessions for New South Wales. Reid did have a majority in House, was made an Honorary Doctor of Civil Law in 1897, was born in Johnstone and served as Minister for Public Instruction. Reid fought for federation at the second referendum. Exception was the passage of the landmark Commonwealth Conciliation. Election Reid made the establishment of a real, free trade tariff at 1894. Federation Reid supported the federation of the Australian colonies. Time Reid had grown sported a overweight walrus moustache, a monocle. Federal politics Reid was elected to the first, federal parliament as the Member. Tariff debate Reid was at a disadvantage as parliament. Alfred Deakin took over from Barton as Prime Minister. The Deakin government continued with Labour support for the time.
